Afrofuturism Through Love Politics- Visual

Afrofuturism is an artistic and cultural movement that combines elements of science fiction,

historical fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentrism to reimagine the past and envision the future of the

African diaspora. The crown and the words surrounding the figure in the image symbolize

empowerment, pride, and the celebration of black identity, which are core aspects of

Afrofuturism. This movement often seeks to reclaim narratives that have historically

marginalized black voices and to project a future where black people are central to technological

and cultural advancements.

The crown, in particular, signifies royalty and self-worth, suggesting a reclaiming of heritage and

a vision of a future where black individuals are celebrated and respected. The words like

"Liberation," "Unity," and "Empowerment" resonate with the themes of Afrofuturism by

envisioning a world where black people are free from oppression and are able to thrive and lead.

Love politics, on the other hand, is about the radical act of loving oneself and others in a society

that often devalues black lives. It involves nurturing community, fostering unity, and promoting

self-love as acts of resistance against systemic racism. The words "Self Love," "Beauty," and

"Bold" in the image highlight the importance of loving oneself and each other as a form of

political resistance.

By combining these elements, the image speaks to the power of Afrofuturism in imagining a

future where Black people are not only surviving but flourishing, and how love politics can be a

transformative force in achieving this vision. The depiction of the crown and the affirming words

surrounding the figure serve as a powerful reminder of the strength, beauty, and resilience of the

black community.

It begs the questions: what if blackness and queerness were celebrated? What if they were the standard? It also fits this framework through its fantastical expressions of black creativity/identity and the social movements that were prominent in the scene at the time.  Under the “New York City” banner, lies the ballroom world, represented by drag queens from the seminal ballroom film “Paris is Burning”. In the movie, many ballroom participants said the inclusivity in the scene makes their otherwise “otherness” feel celebrated. This is depicted in the collage with the black women covering up the faces of the white models in the bottom right corner. Its influence stems from entertainment, music, literature, all the way to foods, clothing styles, and hairstyles. Afrofuturism encompasses these elements of the past and the present and introduces a reimagining of the future- ultimately it is the past with the future. Examples of this broad genre can be found nuanced in many things most people encounter on a daily basis.
