My final project is in a visual format. I did a PowerPoint that shows how gender norms and emotions are tied back into Afrofuturism by using a short story called “Can You Wear My Eyes” by Kalamu ya Salaam. In my PowerPoint presentation, I discuss the meaning of Afrofuturism; I also give examples of themes that are used in Afrofuturism and the challenges that are faced with this topic. I showed a visual part with pictures and a video that discusses a small part of Afrofuturism. Moving on to the next slide that is shown in my presentation, I give the definition of gender norms and examples of how people perceive black men and black women in society. I give a video that shows two black women explaining the narratives of what people think about black women and how it’s shown in this society. I go on to my next slide to explain how Gender and Emotions are shown in Afrofuturism. I tell you how gender is being reimagined and how Technology is tied in with emotions by being shown as a tool that is being used in setting that is futuristic. Next, on my power point, I just give a brief summary of the short story “ Can You Wear My Eyes”. I will explain how the protagonist is experiencing limitations of Identity and how roles are being imposed by society. Moving forward I discuss the gender norms that are
portrayed in the short story, I also give you a quote from the short story as an example of the gender roles and perspectives the protagonist is experiencing with wearing the eyes of his wife. I give a picture of a man and women breaking of the gender constructs. Going on to the next slide I discuss the how gender norms are being challenged by Afrofuturism and the connection of my topic being used in the short story. Coming to the end of my power point I gave some examples of artists/ activists that are pushing gender norms in their work.
