Major Project Written Form

For my major project, I chose to create a lesson plan for twelfth graders. I decide to do the twelfth grade because they will graduate high school and go to the “real world”. With that, learning about Afrofuturism will sprinkle a little extra hope for them to be able to dream big about what they want to do with their life. Especially black women.  This is why the theme I chose under the Afrofuturism umbrella is; Reimagining The Black Woman’s Experience. The overall objective for my theme is for the students to be able to be able to learn about Afrofuturism on a broader scale, then focus on the black woman’s experience and how it can be reimagined. Upon arrival, the students will be given a blank index card to answer the question “ What is a black woman’s experience.” On the opposite side they will also answer the question “What do you know or can guess about Afrofuturism?” A way to introduce them to what they will be learning about during this lesson based off their knowledge. I have four planned activities to go with my lesson The First Activity, is just introducing the students to Afrofuturism through a  PowerPoint Presentation. Tell them what is afrofuturism, and when it was first defined, and give them some examples. Using that same PowerPoint,  for the second activity the students will do an in-class Assignment where they will research and present an example of afro-futurism to help them better understand the topic. The third Activity will be the students watching and dissecting films with Black Female Lead Roles. These films will show different experiences black women have to live in. These films are Hidden Figures, Eve’s Bayou, and For Colored Girls. Thirdly, The” Black Experience Vision Board” is an opportunity for the students to create a vision board based on their dreams after high school. Lastly, in “Sip and Paint: High School Edition” students will paint premade black women sketches while adding positive affirmations. Students will base their mural on themselves or an important black woman in their life to show their appreciation for them. For field Trips, the first field trip we would go on is a trip to Denver, Colorado to visit The Museum For Black Girls, the second one students will travel to The Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad National Historical Park, and the last one students will be split into groups to attend a speak and engage session with different black women empowerment speakers. Those speakers are Lisa Leslie, Vernice Armour, Cynthia Marshall, and Viola Davis. Lastly, for homework, the students have two assignments. The first one is to research an Afro-futuristic short story and provide a summary of it. The other assignment is for the students to interview a black woman they would idolize outside of class and write an essay on that person; sharing a few experiences they have lived through as black women. To close the lesson, the students will provide feedback on whether or not they enjoyed the lesson and if they want to have a lesson similar to this one in the future.
