I have created a Pinterest collage that explores the future of African Americans in the
science field, with a particular emphasis on African American women in STEM. This
project draws inspiration from the groundbreaking achievements of pioneering African
American women who have made significant contributions to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics. The collage uses a combination of historical context and
forward-thinking imagery to reimagine what is possible in STEM because of these
women’s courage and determination. The background of the collage represents the
past—highlighting key moments in history—while the images that overlay the articles
symbolize the future, imagining what can be achieved moving forward due to the
foundation these trailblazers have laid. The project incorporates articles from
well-known and credible sources that focus on the first African American women to
make strides in various STEM fields. For instance, one article highlights Georgiana
Simpson, the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in the U.S., while another
covers Inez Beverly Prosser, the first African American woman to receive a doctorate
in psychology. The collage also features Alma Levant Hayden, the first African
American chemist at the FDA, and Mae C. Jemison, the first African American woman
to travel into space as an astronaut. Each article not only reflects the significant
achievements of these women but also tells a larger story about perseverance, breaking
barriers, and creating opportunities for those who follow. To further enhance the project,
I carefully selected images, or "stickers," that align with each article's theme and its
corresponding message. These visual elements were hand-picked to highlight both
futuristic possibilities and the empowerment of African American women in STEM.
Every piece of artwork was chosen with the intention to inspire, celebrate, and
encourage the continued progress of African American women in science and
technology. In creating this collage, I also drew inspiration from the themes of
Afrofuturism we have explored in class. Afrofuturism blends elements of African culture,
technology, and science fiction to envision a world where African Americans, particularly
women, play a leading role in shaping the future. By integrating Afrofuturism into this
project, I aimed to celebrate the innovative spirit of African American women and to
highlight the incredible potential they hold for shaping the future of STEM.
